Earlier this week, I presented two papers at the Polytechnic Ibadan’s Faculty of Business and Communication Studies (FBCS) International Conference – on behalf of a wonderful team of researchers led by resourceful Lekan Togunwa.
One examined the social conditions that dictate the working environment in journalism practice in this dispensation. We identified poor remuneration and non payment of salaries (running into several months) ocassioned by failing economy, lack of regard for ethical and professional practices as some of the challenges bedeveling the only noble profession vividly recognized by the Nigerian Constitution.
We acknowledged the role government and all stakeholders must play to get the forth estate of the realm working for the common good of all. Government must work for a prosperous economy; professionals must be disciplined while media houses must re-strategize their operations for optimum results. We hold strongly that the success of every democracy rests on the vibrancy of her media.
The second paper evaluated the importance of strategic communication in political marketing during electioneering. Though very important, and effective, we concluded that political actors must deploy the strategy with their target group in mind. Rather than rely on propaganda, we canvassed for promotion of credible messages and candidates’ programmes.
Our view is hinged on the need to build a strong electioneering and democractic processes as the basis for improved governance and public service. This is the only assurance for our desired Nigeria. We must all support it.
God bless Nigeria.
