Disappointments are not desirable. We work all life to avoid them.
Despite our efforts, they happen anyway and what can man do other than to pick valuable lessons? And you know what they say about experience, don’t you?
As citizens of Nigeria, we have earned a good dose of experience in the past few days. We have seen the power inherent in unity of purpose.
More than ever, we can see that our lives depend on what happen in government and what public officials do. These set of people and their co-travellers show no empathy to the need of the people and our collective aspiration for this country. We all can tell.
Going forward, we must make it a duty to engage and follow the process. We cannot afford these lots again. All of them!
As Theodore Roosevelt once said; “Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else.”
May the efforts of our lost heroes not be in vain… Stop! ๏ Rather than murmur ‘Amen’, be prepared to act democratically by registering and voting during elections and holding leaders to account. That is your power as a citizen regardless of your political leaning.
We can. We will. We must.
